From Barbarians of Gor
A series of links to help new players get up to speed on our fiction quickly. Please note, we take our fiction seriously and expect you to learn. We do not do applications and are willing to let you learn as your role-play, but don't take the lack of applications as indication that we are not as serious about our fiction as others may be.
Further, we are attempting to cultivate a like-minded community that is pro-Gor with these these ideals in mind. If you're not yet on page with these goals, you're welcome to join us as long as you're moving toward the goal. If you have no desire to fit in with this ideal (or worse, you're just here for easy targets), this may not be the server for you and you may be forced to leave by the community or asked to leave by the admins.

- What is Gor? If you know nothing about Gor, you should read this article first.
- Gor RP Etiquette (Rules)
- There are some significant differences in our role-play etiquette then you may be familiar with if you come from a standard role-play communities. Such differences include the way we communicate with each other out of character, how we handle thought-emotes, meta-gaming, power gaming, and OOC limits. You will be expected to understand these differences. <Read More>
- Gorean Cheat Sheet
- We have created as brief a list of important information about Gorean role-play as is possible to do with a fiction that spans more then 30 books. It is not everything you need to know, and many experienced Goreans will disagree with the priority placed on one thing over another, but it should get you started. <Read More>
- Gor Roleplay
- Roleplaying in Gor runs the gambit from strict to casual. We are a BtB "By the Book" server which means we fall in the strict category. However, like any fiction spanning 30+ books opinions on what is and isn't by the book vary significantly. As a server it is our intention to establish both the bare minimums as well as help role-players adapt to any differences between the main land of Gor and this remote land of New Sardar. <Read More>
Where to find more information
- Read the Books
- You will hear this over and over and over so you might as well get use to it. Go read the books.
- Gorean Cave
- The Gorean Cave is generally considered a safe website for Gorean knowledge because it offers book quotes without interpretation
What is (Gorean) Immersive OOC
I do not beleive this is a term anyone has used before, and certainly one I've never seen written down. But I ponder stuff and I write things. So it became apparent to me that Gor has a unique OOC community in many Gorean role-play communities. The cause of which is unclear but likely stems from the blending of Gorean lifestylers and Gorean role-players.
Gorean OOC is a way of speaking out of character while maintaining a Gorean Aesthetic. Examples of this may include:
- A certain polite formality between players that has a heightened sense of courtesy, where terms like Sir, Ma'am, Lady, Girl, Master, Jarl and Mistress are used. In most communities, especially ours, this is not a requirement but rather a style of ooc interaction that lightly maintains immersion even when not in character.
- The use of Gorean words such as pasang for distance and ahn for an hour. Or even using the gorean words for animals, foods and drinks, even when discussing completely anachronistic topics such as going to the grocery store.
I will add more examples as I remember them, but for now it is simply of value to note this is -a thing- so that you are not confused by "are we rping or not". The answer may very well be ... -kinda-.
Backstory
If you are going to jump into role-play right away you need to know somethings about your character's possible back story. I have outlined the key points.
Gor Mainland Native
We prefer that you play someone from the mainland of Gor rather then anything else and will happily teach you and include you in the role-play.
Earth Native
Playing as someone from Earth
This is a common backstory for those who are new to Gor, and it is certainly a valid backstory in the fiction, especially for slaves. However, it is so common that the RP community has grown a little weary of it. So please consider the following consequences before choosing this option.
- English (and all other earth languages) are not the same as Gorean, and there is no "common". Consequently, anyone brought from Earth will not be able to speak the Gorean language and a fair number of Gorean role-players are just done with this role-play and will not engage.
- Untrained Slaves or Free Woman turn Slave: While we all understand that part of the allure of the books is the erotic descent into Gorean love slave, there are rarely enough male roleplayers who enjoy the training of slave girls to satisfy those who wish to experience this.
- Further there are many lore examples of slave girls simply being punnished "until they figure it out" for the rest of the male population to justifiably not engage in this type of role-play if it doesn't interest them.
- References to Earth lore, technology, food, history, etc are rarely appreciated in Gorean role-play. We do not want to talk about hamburgers, airplanes, televisions or World War II -- AND this is almost never brought into the book as dialog, so its a justified pushback.
Far more respected is the new player who is trying their best to learn the fiction without forcing the educational process onto others.
Island Native
This server's fiction offers a perhaps more viable half-way point that should be more palettable:
The lands we are on in Conan Exiles are in fact on the plant of Gor and have in theory been discovered many times over the last few decades by shipwrecked Goreans. It is entirely plausible to be a native of these lands and have learned Gorean, or better yet to be the child of shipwrecked Goreans who was raised here. I suspect that role-players will be far more interested in the role-play from others about these new lands then they will be about Earth.
However, this option should never be used to try and force some personal head canon as being "valid" because we are another part of the planet. It is not a license for creating new cultures.
